Step 1 — confirm you are eligible
In Indiana the minimum age for a learner's permit is 15. If you are under 18 you usually need to be enrolled in school in good standing, and you must have a parent or legal guardian co-sign your application accepting financial responsibility. Take care of these prerequisites before you book an appointment, because the IN BMV will not start your application without the parent signature in person or a notarized form.
Step 2 — gather documents
You will need an original (not photocopied) proof of identity — a US passport, certified birth certificate, or permanent-resident card — proof of your Social Security number, two proofs of Indiana residency, and the parent signature described above. Bring originals plus one photocopy of each so the clerk can keep a copy without taking your originals.

Step 3 — book and prepare for the knowledge test
Schedule your appointment online at the IN BMV site. Walk-ins are allowed in some Indiana counties but expect a multi-hour wait. Step 4 — pass the test and start the supervised period
You will take the test at the counter on a touchscreen. After passing, pay the current permit fee of $9 and receive a temporary paper permit. Your real card will arrive in the mail within 10–21 business days. The supervised period in Indiana lasts 180 days — during that time you must always have a licensed adult age 21 or older in the front passenger seat and you must keep a log of supervised hours.
Step 5 — schedule your road test
The earliest you can take the Indiana road test is the day your supervised hold period expires. Bring your permit, your supervised-driving log, proof of insurance for the test vehicle, and the vehicle's registration. Working brakes, turn signals, brake lights, mirrors, horn, and seat belts in every position are required for the vehicle to be eligible.
