Practice tests

DMV Permit Practice Tests for All 50 States

Every state has its own driver handbook and its own permit test. Find yours below — each page has 20 randomized questions drawn from a bank built around that state's official handbook topics.

How the practice tests work

Each state-specific test on PermitPrep contains 20 questions drawn from a larger pool of authentic DMV permit questions. The pool covers every topic that appears on the state's official knowledge exam: road signs, signals and markings; right-of-way at intersections, roundabouts and uncontrolled crossings; speed limits and the basic speed law; alcohol, drugs, and implied consent; sharing the road with bicycles, motorcycles, large trucks, school buses and emergency vehicles; railroad crossings; parking; and the documents and fees required to apply for a learner's permit.

Answers are revealed immediately along with a short explanation. There is no time limit, no signup, and no fee — refresh the page to get a different mix of questions for the same state. Use the topic guides linked from each test to drill down on whichever subject you keep missing.

Where the questions come from

Question pools are derived from the public domain content of each state's official driver handbook (e.g., the California Driver Handbook published by the California DMV, the New York Driver's Manual published by the NY DMV) plus widely-used open-source DMV question banks. PermitPrep is an independent educational site and is not affiliated with any state government or DMV. Always verify current rules with your state's official driver handbook before your real test — fees and minimum ages change.
